Sarah Cox
Sarah Cox is the Sierra Club BC’s Communications Director, overseeing the development and implementation of all of the BC Chapter’s strategic communications.
Since she joined the Sierra Club in April 2006, Sarah has helped raise the Sierra Club’s profile in the media and with decision-makers, produced communications materials for Sierra Club campaigns, written the BC Chapter’s first strategic communications plan and led the organization through the on-going development of a new website.
Before joining the Sierra Club, Sarah was an award-winning magazine writer who focused on business, the environment and globalization. She also worked as a part-time consultant for government and non-profits, doing research, writing and policy analysis on topics ranging from food security to offshore oil and gas exploration. Prior to becoming a magazine writer, Sarah spent five years as a staff reporter with the Vancouver Sun and Ottawa Citizen.
Sarah holds a M.A. in Political Science, with a focus on international development, and a Graduate Diploma in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. She is fluent in Spanish. Sarah’s passion for B.C.’s natural environment, along with her growing concern about the type of world her daughter will inherit, motivates her to use her communications skills and political knowledge in the non-profit sector.

Strategic Challenge:
The recent spike of public and political interest in all things environmental and green – especially relating to climate change—means that we need to re-position ourselves and re-think our role and raison d’etre. Two of our major campaigns for 2007 were won in February. The B.C. government has created at least eight new positions that will focus exclusively on climate change issues, including a full-time position dedicated entirely to reducing government greenhouse gas emissions, and another full-time position devoted to developing communications materials on climate change for the public. As government and business take over some of our key former roles and responsibilities, what does the future hold for Sierra Club BC?
