This year’s theme is Building Power for Change.
Each year we anchor the program around a theme that is a key issue in social change. As we move to an increasingly complex world, the nature and shape of power becomes a vital inquiry. How do we ensure that justice and expression is shared by all of us? How do we empower others to take action and have their voices heard? As organizations and leaders, can we lead from a place that inspires others, and how do we transform ourselves and our organizations to lead in a wise and authentic way.
Creativity, personal inquiry and healthy practices such as meditation or silent time form an integral part of our programming and are built into the curriculum.
Each day features a mix of skill-building workshops, case studies on social change projects; dialogue and group work with your peers.
Some of the workshops that will be offered are:
- Organizational Leadership
- Grassroots Mobilization
- Building Effective Coalitions
- Transformational Leadership
- Fine Art of Negotiation
- Creativity and Activism
- Personal Ecology
- Electoral Strategies
A full list of workshops and faculty will be posted on an ongoing basis. Please check the site frequently for the latest information.

The Participants:
SCI features a community of over 100 senior leaders of social innovation from non-profit, political advocacy, social enterprise, philanthropy and the arts.
Designed for non-profit Executive Directors, social mission CEOs and senior strategists, this is a unique opportunity to spend time in a peer community and receive professional and personal support. Our over-arching theme for 2008 is Building Power. We will draw upon examples of successful-work in Canada and the US, and explore ways to build on success.

What participants are saying about the Social Change Institute
"The value of
spending time with one's peers in this work, in exploring ideas and
interacting socially, can not be underestimated. I feel inspired,
rejuvenated and supported. I went to SCI feeling very isolated in my
work and its challenges and came away with a community.”
“SCI provided me with an opportunity to pull back from the daily demands of providing leadership in my organization to think about commitment to social change in the larger context. I was also offered time to breath and sit with members of a galvanizing community who reminded me I am not alone.”
“I
left SCI feeling hopeful, energized, inspired and determined. I've never
learned so much or laughed so much.”
"It seems we are finally learning that we will not achieve a globally equitable, sustainable society by continuing to tackle disparate problems in separate corners. At the SCI I felt organizers and participants implicitly understood that we must find the linkages between all 'issues', find the convergence of values that will help us shift away from the precipice. This vision was palpable, and made the event far richer than just 'a conference' - as we learned from each other and shared our knowledge and passions, it felt like we were helping define an important small turning point in the history of progressive change."
“The Peer-to-peer learning was invaluable.”
