Is your life in balance?

A practical tool to help you start moving your life from stressed to serene.

Balance is such a buzz word these days. Platitudes are given about how much we need it, but rarely does anyone show us how that might be achieved. So the practical part of me was plenty excited to get this tool from our Art of Leadership course. Designed by Robert Gass, this survey attempts to look at all aspects of your life, from your health, to relationships to how much caffeine you drink (ok, I admit, I did try to skip over that section, I swore I’ve read somewhere that a latte a day keeps the doctor away, no?) to help you take a look at the many aspects that make up our health and happiness. Having this detailed overview really helps you identify where you are functioning well, and what areas you might want to improve on.

A few things to remember:

  1. Celebrate what you are doing well. If you have good relationships with colleagues, family or friends, or have remained committed to a healthy diet, then thank yourself for being committed to your own health and happiness. Too often we focus on what’s not working, rather than affirming ourselves for what we do well.
  2. When you have identified problem areas, don’t promise to rectify them all next week. Many of us set unrealistic goals for change, thinking we will hit the gym 5 days a week after not going for 2 years. Start small and add gradually. The research shows it takes a minimum of 3 weeks before a habit can be formed.
  3. Recognize outside factors. Generally we don’t live in a society that values vacations, relationships and spirituality all that well. Canadian culture, much like American culture, has placed emphasis on making money, status through employment, and overwork. Fighting against that is no small feat, so give yourself time to make choices and find like-minded folks who share your approach.
