Get Your Vote On Earth Day Event
This is a rare showcase of Vancouver’s diverse hip hop scene. Artists are coming together at the Commodore Ballroom on April 21st. Doors are at 8pm, with the show starting at 9pm. Tickets are $12 at Ticketmaster and $15 at the door. Sponsored by Greenpeace, ForestEthics and Sierra Club of Canada, BC Chapter.
This event featuring Moka Only, with DJ Serious, plus Juno winner Kinnie
Starr, Sekoya, Kia Kadiri, and the Front is unique not just for its lineup,
but for its theme – Earth Day. See

“We wanted to prove that Earth Day doesn’t have to be all about Birkenstocks and guitars,” says show promoter, Cass Elliott. “So we pulled together a show that would bring out a big crowd and appeal to a lot of different people.”
The event is organized by the non-partisan voter education and registration campaign, Get Your Vote On. It is part of their strategy that brings issues and culture together, to connect with young, potential voters and get the under 35’s out to the polls on May 17th. The election is too close to call in some ridings and the difference could well be the numbers of young people who get to the polls. The environment ranks as one of the top three concerns for young British Columbians according to a 2004 survey Get Your Vote On.
“The environment is a high priority for people in our demographic,” says Get Your Vote On Outreach Coordinator, Johanna Mazur. “This show is an opportunity to reach out to people and put on a great event at the same time.”
With each artist recognized as a unique force in their own right, together they offer a chance for Vancouver to revel in the full range of talent that our city has to offer. Headliner Moka Only, formerly of the Swollen Members, has been called a “hip hop luminary,” while Juno award nominee, Kinnie Starr, is notorious for crossing the musical boundaries of funk, hip hop, trip hop, pop, rock, and electronica.
Critically acclaimed Sekoya adds to the mix an element of global sound, nujazz and futuresoul, while the much - loved local diva, Kia Kadiri, brings her abilities to move from soul to rap to spoken word to party rocking hip hop. Fresh out of the studio, The Front start off the night with an arsenal of new material to send out to Vancouver’s favourite dance floor.
Get Your Vote On (GYVO) is working to reinvigorate the democratic process for 18 to 34 year olds – the most disengaged voting demographic in our province. GYVO is an innovative, non-partisan campaign by and for young folks. Get Your Vote On is building a province-wide network of young voters who are empowered to speak out, shape our own futures and hold our elected representatives accountable.
