The recent provincial election here in British Columbia marked the end of the first phase of Hollyhock Leadership Institute’s successful Organizing for Change project. This project works with environmentalists and other progressive sectors to ensure their concerns are heard in the public debate that surrounds elections. But like any good project, it raises as many questions as it answers.

Hi friends, I'm afraid to say it, but you know it...it's almost holiday time. Soon the flow of party invitations will begin and you'll be wrangling over holiday plans. And likely at some point in the frenzy, you'll pause and reflect on what this whole holiday business is on about. For those who don't identify with particular religious or cultural traditions, it's not always an easy question to answer. For me these days, the answer lies in an emerging conversation about what some are calling "spiritual activism".

Now is the time for coming together. This is the message I am hearing loud and clearly, almost everywhere I go these days. And it makes me so hopeful. Whether I am in a room full of activists, of philanthropists or political organizers, the underlying question behind every conversation seems to be - how can we work together to build a united movement that will take us where we need to go.

2006 was an exciting year of growth at Hollyhock Leadership Institute. Core support from donors and foundations provided us the freedom to innovate and exand our movement convening, training, and strategy work. This year, we provided 42 training days, including scholarships to 187 social change leaders - a doubling of the scholarships awarded in 2005. With the launch of our popular e-newsletter, ChangeMakers, we also doubled our list of activists and supporters! Thank-you all for your support this year.
